    Title: Towards Multi-Layer Interoperability of IoT Platforms: the INTER-IoT approach

    While still in his infancy, the IoT domain already lists a number of solutions implemented, ranging from simple devices to full-fledged platforms. However, the heterogeneity at all levels (device, networking, middleware, services, data and semantics) of those solutions is preventing different systems to interoperate effectively, despite significant efforts in the development of a unique reference standard for IoT systems technology. The situation is likely to worsen in the near future, as lack of interoperability will cause major technological and business-oriented issues such as impossibility to plug non-interoperable IoT devices into heterogeneous IoT platforms, impossibility to develop IoT applications exploiting multiple platforms in homogeneous and/or cross domains, slowness of IoT technology introduction at large-scale, discouragement in adopting IoT technology, increase of costs, scarce reusability of technical solutions, and user dissatisfaction. This keynote will aim at analyzing such lack of interoperability in the IoT realm by proposing, as effective solution, the INTER-IoT approach that is being developed in our EU-funded H2020 project. In particular, first the keynote will provide the state-of-the-art of research- and standard-oriented approaches (including AIOTI and IEEE P2413); then, it will focus on the current status of the "products" of INTER-IoT granting multi-layer interoperability and IoT platform integration: INTER-LAYER, INTER-FW, and INTER-METH. Finally, we present two case studies in which our solutions will be tested: INTER-Health (interoperability among e-Health platforms) and INTER-LogP (interoperability in port logistics).

    Giancarlo Fortino (SM’12) received the Laurea (B.S and M.S) and Ph.D in computer engineering from the University of Calabria, Italy, in 1995 and 2000, respectively. He is currently an Associate Professor of Computer Engineering (since 2006) with the Department of Informatics, Modeling, Electronics and Systems (DIMES), University of Calabria. He holds the Scientific Italian Habilitation for Full Professor and he is also Adjunct Full Professor of Computer Engineering at Wuhan University of Technology in the framework of High-End Foreign Experts in China and adjunct senior researcher at Italian National Research Council. He authored more than 275 publications in journals, conferences, and books. He is currently the Scientific and Technical Project Manager of the EU-funded H2020 INTER-IoT project on heterogeneous IoT platform interoperability. His research interests include distributed computing, wireless sensor networks, software agents, IoT technology, cloud computing. He is an associate editor of IEEE Trans. on Affective Computing, IEEE Trans. on Human-Machine Systems, Information Fusion, Engineering Application of Artificial Intelligence, Journal of Network and Computer Applications. He is founding co-chair of SMC TC on Interactive and Wearable Computing and Devices and is the Chair of the Italian Chapter of the IEEE SMC Society. He is co-founder and CEO of SenSysCal S.r.l., a spin-off of University of Calabria, engaged in advanced applied research and development of IoT systems.

    Title: An Application of the IoT in Belt Conveyor Systems

    The Internet of Things and Big data these days means big business. Monitoring Belt Conveyor Systems used to be performed by means of inspectors and off line. These days the developments are towards fully automated inspection systems. The IoT enables that more information from sensor systems becomes available that was not available in the past. Theoretically this means that monitoring Belt Conveyor systems 24/7 should become reality and downtime and unexpected maintenance a thing of the past. All these sensor systems produce a vast amount of information. Big data implies a combination of databases too large and/or too diverse to maintain by regular database management systems. Big data plays an ever-increasing role these days. This paper discusses an application of the IoT in bulk solid handling and transportation systems and the utilization of big data. It discusses recent developments and a case study.

    Speacker Info: Gabriel Lodewijks is currently professor of Transport Engineering and Logistics at Delft University of Technology. He obtained his Master degree (cum laude) in mechanical engineering at Twente University and Delft University of Technology (1992), The Netherlands and his PhD degree at Delft University of Technology on the dynamics of belt systems (October 1996). Between 2003 and 2015 he was chairman of the Department of Maritime and Transport Technology of the Faculty of Mechanical, Maritime and Materials Engineering. Moreover, between 2011 and 2015 he was vice dean of this faculty. He acted as Chief Technology Officer for Schiphol Group between 2007 and 2010, and holds visiting professorships at Wuhan University of Technology (since 2013), China University of Mining and Technology (since 2013), University of Witwatersrand (since 2008), and University of New Castle (since 2007). His main interests are in automation of transport systems, belt conveyor technology, DEM applications in transport, material engineering and dynamics.

    Title: IoT and Big Data in Intelligent Buildings

    The Internet of Things (IoT) envisions the seamless interconnection of the physical world and the cyber space. On the other hand, Big Data is a broad term for data sets so large or complex that traditional data processing technologies are inadequate. It has recently been considered as a technology and become a very active research area primarily involving topics related to machine learning, database, and distributed computing. It has been claimed that “the success or failure of the Internet of Things hinges on Big Data”. In fact, Big Data analytics or technology can be viewed as the tool that gives business value to large data sets. Based on many years of first-hand experience on development and deployment of Intelligent Building technologies in large office buildings, this talk will provide an overview of IoT and Big Data, including stat-of-the-art and future trends, with a focus on how IoT and Big Data are linked with and applied in Intelligent Buildings. Best practices, challenges, and future research directions will also be discussed.

    Dr. Weiming Shen is a Senior Research Officer at the National Research Council Canada. He is Fellow of IEEE, Fellow of Engineering Institute of Canada (EIC), and Professional Engineer of Ontario (PEO). He received his Bachelor and Master’s degrees from Northern (Beijing) Jiaotong University, China and his PhD degree from the University of Technology of Compiègne, France. He is an internationally-recognized expert on Agent-Based Collaborative Technologies and Applications. During the past eight years, he has been leading a number of major projects on IoT and Big Data with applications to Smart Homes and Intelligent Buildings. He has published several books and over 400 papers in scientific journals and international conferences in the related areas. His work has been cited over 9,000 times with an h-index of 43. He is a member of the Steering Committee for the IEEE Transactions on Affective Computing and an Associate Editor or Editorial Board Member of over ten international journals (including IEEE Transactions on Automation Science and Engineering; IEEE Transaction on SMC: Systems; IEEE SMC Magazine; Advanced Engineering Informatics; Computational Intelligence; Intelligent Buildings International; Service Computing and Applications) and served as guest editor for several other international journals.

    Today's online social networks have pervaded all aspects of our daily lives. With their unparalleled popularity, online social networks have evolved from the platforms for social communication and news dissemination, to indispensable tools for professional networking, social recommendations, marketing, and online content distribution. Their evolution has influenced every technological, societal, and cultural aspect of human beings. They are receiving more and more attention in research communities.
    It has been widely recognized that security and privacy are the critical issues in online social networks. On one hand, online social networks have been the effective platform for the attackers to launch attacks and distribute malicious information. On the other hand, privacy leakage through online social networks has become common exercise. New methods and tools, consequently, must follow up in order to adapt to this emerging security paradigm. In this talk, we will discuss the security and privacy issues in social networks and how we can turn challenges into opportunities to build a more secure cyberspace.

    Title: Developments and Prospects of Intelligent Water Transport in China

    This paper presents a review of Intelligent Water Transport in China. The developments of Intelligent Water Transport are summarized and discussed in terms of polar navigation technology, intelligent waterway service system, intelligent navigation, marine electric propulsion technology, ship energy efficiency management, condition monitoring and fault diagnosis, together with case studies in China. The integrations of the Internet of Things, the Big Data theory and wireless sensing network with the Intelligent Water Transport have been identified as the new features. The trend and prospect of the modern Intelligent Water Transport are finally illustrated.

He received his BSc in Marine Mechanical Engineering from Wuhan University of Water Transportation Engineering, China in 1982 and his Master from the same University in 1987, and his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Xi’an Jiaotong University, China in 1997. His research interests include marine system design and control, condition monitoring and fault diagnosis, tribology and its industrial application, intelligent transport system, and marine new energy technology, etc. He is the member of ISO/TC108/SC5 Committee and the editorial member of the Journal of Maritime Environment(U.K.). Now he is the Director of the National Research Engineering Center for Water Transport Safety, and the Chair Professor in Transportation Engineering in Wuhan University of Technology, China.

    Title: Semantic Web Technology for Industrial Internet of Things

    Industrial Internet of Things is a network of connected various technical components, such as sensors, actuators, filed devices, controllers, datasets, APPs, and so on. In order to realize vision of smart manufacturing, these technical components should behave in an autonomous and intelligent way. However, deep heterogeneity of these technical components prohibits their interoperation, making the mentioned autonomous and intelligent operating paradigm a huge challenge.
    Semantic Web technology offers effective methods to address the theoretical challenge of semantic mismatch and implementational challenge of heterogeneity.
    This report introduces background of Semantic Web technology for Industrial Internet of Things. Then key challenges and technology groups related to Semantic Web technology are analyzed. Finally, related work being done in Shenyang Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences is presented and an outlook is made.

He is now Vice-Chairman of the Chinese Association of Automation, Chairman of China National Technical Committee on Industrial Process Measurement and Control Standardization, Vice-Chairman of China National Technical Committee on Automation Systems and Integration Standardization, ISA Fellow, and Director of State Key Laboratory of Robotics.
    Prof. YU’s research interests mainly cover industrial communication and real-time system, distributed and networked control system, industrial wireless technology, industrial Internet of Things and smart manufacturing. He has been directing and participating in many national research programmes like Natural Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars and Key Programs, State High-Tech Development Plan (863 Program) for Key Programs, and Key Programs of Chinese Academy of Sciences. He has published around 100 papers in many distinguished journals and international conferences and 2 books.
    Prof. YU has been awarded 3 National Science and Technology Progress Awards (Second Class Award), 1 State Technological Invention Award (Second Class Award) and 5 Provincial and Ministerial Level Technological Invention or Science and Technology Progress Awards.
